MarketingSherpa has compiled a list of the best tactics to deploy when using links to improve search engine rankings.
These include developing useful content that other sites will want to link to, such as loan interest calculators, as well as link bait like contests and breaking news, according to the research company.
Getting content submitted to the likes of Digg and Reddit can also offer a significant boost when it comes to inbound linking, while researching competitors’ linking and targeting sites whose links will be highly valuable were also recommended.
"Do not ask every person linking to your site to use the same anchor text. Search engines penalise sites that have too many inbound links with the same text; it skews their results," MarketingSherpa stated.
"They argue that ‘naturally’ created links would have more variance."
This follows the recent start of a trial by the BBC involving the inclusion of outgoing links to its news stories.
According to E-consultancy’s Graham Charlton, however, the BBC’s method of opening these links without leaving its own pages may put web users off.
